Posturology is an interdisciplinary discipline that focuses on the study and analysis of erect posture alterations, postural regulation, the study of body oscillations, as well as the relationship between the neuromuscular system and the postural system. It is based on the idea that postural regulation is essential for the right function of the human body and is influenced by a variety of systems that inform our Central Nervous System. These systems include the visual system, the vestibular system (related to balance and spatial orientation), foot exteroception, the neural system and its somatic and neurovegetative communication pathways, and the proprioceptive and interoceptive system (the internal perception of the body, its organs, and joints with their respective movements), among others.
Posturology seeks to understand how these systems interact and how their imbalances can lead to postural problems and a variety of symptoms, such as acute and/or chronic musculoskeletal pain, balance disorders, dizziness, and other discomforts.
Posturologists use specific tests and rely on muscle tone to guide their diagnoses. The importance of those systems on posture is determined, and a optimal and personalized therapeutic approach is sought for the patient.
It is important to note that Posturology is not an isolated discipline; rather, it relies on collaboration among different healthcare professionals, such as physiotherapists, optometrists, podiatrists, dentists, and other specialists. This is because postural issues can result from a combination of factors. Addressing them comprehensively can yield better results for patients.
Through Neuro-Sensory Posturotherapy (PNS) and manual therapy, the posturologist can address bodily dysfunctions and open neural communication pathways to facilitate the work of other specialists in postural treatment. This clinical approach allows him to prioritize and rank treatments following a prior diagnosis, enabling him to develop a therapeutic pathway tailored to the individual.
Posturology is aimed at any adult or child experiencing postural issues, chronic pain, balance problems, visual disorders, or wishing to improve posture, physical performance, cognitive function, and overall well-being.
Athletes and sports enthusiasts can use posturology to enhance performance and prevent injuries.
Posturologist and physiotherapist specialized in sensory posturotherapy and regulation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS).
